I am still playing on my original I7 machine which is now 6 years old. the Nostromo game controller still rocks. Peace out clan.. and remember.... Byte_mE Posted by: slatts on Aug. 21 2016,10:47 sorry to hear about you mom... it don't matter how old the machine is.... mine is about 4 years now to I thinks??? but its an 8 core fully loaded. and it rocks... beats the shit out of playing with a 500mhz.... like the old days on a 33.3 modem. we have come a long way. and this game is still alive. I play a lot of lan with my 13 and 14 year olds. my 14 year old gives me a run for my money.... he beats me a lot. didn't help I bought them machines, and gaming gear... see you out there.... Posted by: Byte_mE on Aug. 21 2016,16:31 i will get out there when i can, i will turn 60 in the spring and working hard for retirement.. the next two years will be very busy. Posted by: wilder on Sep. 13 2016,11:47 Sorry to hear about your mom; but glad to hear you are doing better. CPU advancement hasn't really made a lot of progress in terms of processing power. Your i7 isn't much weaker than today's i7. The main advancements has been focus at power reduction to increase performance per watt. So if you look at perf/watt, than yes today's i7 will blow your old i7 away. You get practically the same core performance, but at 40 watts of power compared to way over 100 watt from 6 years ago. Also the built in intelHD GPU has gotten better, and it produces less heat as well. I think advancement in storage capacity (and IO and solid state) and GPU is the real difference maker. With pcie-SATA SSDs and the latest GPUs, that is really the main reason to upgrade your gig... to a motherboard that supports the latest pcieSSDs and GPUs. BUT if your old mobo supports SATA-3, slapping a SATA3/6G SSD (Samsung 850 pro) and the AMD RX 480 in your GPU should modernize you without completely replacing your system (like new mobo + CPU). My Gig is about 4 years old, and I just only replace the GPU with RX 480. Doesn't feel the need to replace my mobo+cpu yet.
