hmmm, amd and ati was never really behind nvidia and intel in the lower/mid/mainstream market. They are quite competitive, and amd has a better platform (mobo/chipsets/etc).
What they dont have at the moment is the performance crown in either. Intel is still the fastest consumer CPU money can buy; and Nvidia is still the fastest single card consumer GPU money can buy.
In the most part Intel still has more competive CPUs bang/buck ratio & power/watt ratio although just slightly. Intel Q6600 quad cpu is faster than amd phemon quad core cpu, and cost less ($199 for intel, vs $249 for amd 9600), takes less power and generates less heat. So intel's CPU gives you better best bang for the dollar.
The 780G combo with an Athlon or lower-end phemon makes a very good low/mid-end offering for total cost of mobo, cpu, and gpu that delivers a decent enough performance. Yopu can get a 780G mobo and athlon x2 for less than $300 total. The GPU that's included is as good as a radeon 2xxxx HD. Which is going for aboout $150 average. So amd/ati is really aggressively going for the average Joe market. Not quite the extreme gamer.
