what types of monitors do you all have?

I have a friend who wants to know about trails and movement..

if a high graphic game with movement, if you get an effect like a mouse trail.....

(low refresh rates?)

lemme know

it's likely no longer an issue with modern LCD monitors.

The reason CRT modern is/was better is because it has a much faster refresh rate.  the modern LCD hare fast.

When shopping for an LCD, look for screen response speeds of 12ms (milliseconds) or better.  8ms to get something equivalent to a CRT.  but 8ms and faster are the more expensive one.  I saw samsung has something with 5ms!!

The older ones are 25ms and slower.  The LCD I'm using for work is 25ms... and it shows trails and ghosts.  I got another that's 8ms, and it works GREAT!

When looking for specs and shopping for LCD, look for response time.  and make sure it's 8ms or better for ideal gaming LCD monitors.  Be careful if you cannot find the response time.  It's likely the odler and slower 25ms or worst.  So when you see a monitor for sale for cheap... look for the response time.

So it comes down to, 1 more downside which is very minor.  on LCD, the color black isnt as dark as CRT's or plasma.  It's not as deep... and can look dark gray when put side to side with a true black screen.  not a lot of people will notice it tho and cant tell the different.  you'll have to comapre very closely to see the difference.

i learn something new every day..

BTW, the average refresh rate of today's CRT monitors are 3ms (milleseconds).

the fastest LCD you can get are 4ms.  it's still a little slower than CRT, which is why most hardcore gamers still use CRT.  But casual gamers should notice any differences at 12ms and 3ms.  :X

As far me, I guess I'm tempted at those 4ms LCD, but i cant help but wonder if they are coming out with 3ms LCD anytime soon at 19"+ sizes.  :D

Most plasma/LCD TVs are about 8ms.

I am still using a 19"crt a Mitsubishi Diamond Pro 900u.
I am pleased with the performance but concerned with it's
age, coming up on 6 or 7 years in service. I have started
to look at replacement monitors but crt's are very hard
to find. Anyone looking at any specific models of LCD?

Posted by: wilder on July 19 2006,23:42

LG got some for 4MS for 19" with native 1280x1024.  $269 now at bestbuy.

Samsung got a 20.1" for 5MS with native 1600x1200!  ~$360.  I saw it on sale before for about $320.

They are getting quite affordable!

I'm tempted but i think I will wait until my bust first before or until the 3MS comes out.

don't buy a KDS CRT.. mine droped dead after the warranty was up... never left on. even when i walk away for 2 min..
didn't want to burn it out....

go figure?

Posted by: wilder on July 21 2006,12:34

KDS?  KDS is one of those off-brand generics here in the US.  I bought it once cus it was cheap and use it only as a monitor for servers.  It wasnt really left on, since most of my servers I can remote manage it.

But I learn a long time ago not to buy cheapo brands... you get what you paid for.  When they break, you wished you paid a couple bucks more for the better brand cus now you're not only out a monitor the money you dump into it... you need to buy another one.  Add the math together, and it actually cost more than a good brandname.

I still buy store/offbrand products tho... especially when there is no difference in quality... especially trashbags, detergents, asparin, etc, etc.

Electronics... esp computers, go with brands you trust.  :)

i don't call $350.00 cheap.

ya i know i got hosed.

if you're buying a system... go look up Intel CPU codename: "Conroe" processors.  They the biggest word out there now.

Just announce, the retail name is: Intel Core 2 Duo and Intel Core 2 Extreme.  Their midend $3xx CPU beats out the AMD Athlon64 FX-62 but is about 1/3 the price.  Their top of the line Intel Core 2 extreme ($999) beats every other single CPU in every single benchmark you can throw at it.

It's not official out and retail-available.  More like a paper-launch.  You should start seeing them before the end of the year at stores (hopefully sooner).  It gives AMD a chance to come up with something.

But the performance gap is huge!  Even the cheapest Core 2 processor hangs with AMD's high-end CPU, and it cost less than $190!  AMD is going to have to figure out not only to release faster CPUs to compete, but price them to match Intel.  The second fastest CORE 2 is priced MSRP about $400, and it's third fastst is about $300, and they both easily beat the FX-62.

Rumor has it AMD plans to slash their prices to match Intel's.  They dont have a CPU to match Intels top 2 CPU, but for every other CPU that matches Intels performance, they are looking at making the prices cheaper -- rumored...maybe re-package the FX-62 for less than $400.

However, Intel still has the upper hand.  Each CPU runs not only faster than AMD's but also uses less power as in power per watt!

What sucks is that I found this out yesterday, and I just ordered an Opteron 165.  :(  Just spent $700 on a new gaming rig too.  All being shipped to me next week.  $##%#@$@!$$  wish I waited.

Slightly off topic Wilder….lol
Wasn’t this thread about monitors??

He who waits is lost.

Intel in the lead... don’t think so. Those clowns have always been behind AMD
From the get go… I didn’t read the article... what is it a dual core 32 bit.

The only 64 bit processor out there that can run 64 bit is an AMD.
Windows was built for AMD... that Intel crap won’t run worth beens. It has been proven.

Beside I bet AMD already has the 128 bit 4 core stack some were locked up.
Just waiting for the rest of the world to buy what has been just released.

This Dell Dimension 4550 I am working on running XP Pro just hangs Intel 2.5 GHZ my ass.
(Work machine)
I will take my AMD XP 2600 over it any day (current Gamer)
Speaking of gamer… my 64 Bit 4200 X 2 was born and took its first breath last night.
I powered her up and tinkered in the Bios... loaded Win 2000 Pro to get some bench marks at a 32 bit mode.

Won’t be long now…lol

Let's leave this for CRT/LCD discussion.  I blame Bane!  he started talking about building a new PC.  :D  I thought i have him wait to save him some money on building a better one with Core 2 / AMD-next.

Posted by: Guest on July 22 2006,21:41

LoL! now i have you blaming me for [ PooP] bad enough my ex'es do that, now you too!  :D

im on my parents 20 inch wide screen LCD right now, and yes.. its beautiful, very colorful and all.. but its not good for gaming at all, on my P.O.S CRT i can atleast hit bots! but not on this thing, ewwwww... but it does look prettier.    maybe in a few years they will have LCD's ms at better settings or w/e, until then. CRT baby!

Posted by: wilder on July 23 2006,18:55

Samsung just release a model 931BF, it's a 19" LCD monitor with 2ms!!!!!!!  Thats right... no typo.  I just went to the store to see it.  It's 2ms.  I didnt buy one yet.  But it sure got me itching!

It's native 1280x1024 res.  Holy moly!  I want to wait for more reviews on this, but thats a better refresh rate that CRTs and you get the clarity of an LCD digital.

If you dont already a nice monitor and looking to buy a nice gaming monitor.  this is definitely worth a look.  It's on sale this week for $270 at bestbuy.
