+---Topic: My Controller for UT started by diablo

Posted by: Guest on Mar. 12 2003,00:11

I use the numpad as my controller.  The keyboard numpad is kinda too big, so one day @ CompUSA I saw a laptop numpad.  Since laptops dont have a numpad, you gotta get the keyboard extension as a usb add-on.

Then I thought ####, that would be sweet since I can put the numpad anywhere in the desk thats comfortable for my hand to play with.

It cost me $30, and is well spent.

Here's a quick pic of it how how I set up UT to work with the numpad.

the "/" and "*" can be assigned to anything you want.  Maybe 2 of your other favorite weapons.    I have it equip "/" for enforcer, and "*" for flakcannon.  Sometimes they are unassigned because I forgot to on some systems.

the "1", "2", "3" and "0" key can be assigned too.  But they are not as important as the ones I colored.

The keys "7" and "4" both are strafe-Left, and "9" and "6" are both strafe-Right.  "8" is forward, and "9" is backward.

"." is my kneel or crouch key.  Good for a quick snip or dodge during a fight.

YES I kneel too during a dual... kneel, dodge, flip jump translocate.

As you can see "Enter" is my Redeemer.  It's a big fat button to make sure I dont hit the wrong key when I want to deemer some dumb ass.  and ESR is assigned to the big "+" key.

I never go "next weapon", i always previous weapon is more useful so thats bind to the "-" key.

This is how I can switch betwee deemer, esr, translocator at god-like speed.  ;-)

I also pulled out the numlock key and broke it on purpose so I dont accidentally hit it during the game.  This is annoying if you do it too many times, UT will LOCK your keys.  You will always be moving left, right, forward, depending on the last key you hit when it locks.  No way to fix accept to wait for 1 to 5 minute until it unlocks, or quite and reboot.  :(  So breaking the numlock is better.  -- dont do it to the numlock on your keyboard.  I did it only to the numlock on the external usb numpad I use as a controller.

I find the numpad as the best FPS controller out there.  Ironically it isnt meant to be a game controller... fuck it.  LEt's paint it with arrow keys and re-sell it as UT controller and all get rich!

As for my mouse config (not talking about which mouse is the best) for a 3 button with wheel:

Left-click = primary fire
Middle-click = alternate fire
Right-click = jump
Wheel-Up = Translocator
Wheel-down = sniper-rifle

Quick Snipe mode for me:

1) Wheel up to Translocate to ideal location

2) Wheel down to switch to sniper rifle

3) wheel-press or middle-click to use alternate fire, which is the zoom mode for the sniper-rifle

4) fire a few times until noticed.

5) wheel-press again to cancel zoom.

from here i can zoom in again once confirm no one notice me, or i can wheel up and translocate outta there.

With the wheel function and key, i can alternate into sniper mode and out real fast.  Makes me a fast translocator/sniper.  My ESR key is bound to the big "+" key, so I can switch between sniper/esr/deemer in an instant assuming there is no lag in the game.

that sounds and looks kewl ;)

my config is this:
I have one of those new type keyboards that split down the middle( to ease the carpal tunnels that people get from using the standard board) anyhow

I use the arrow keys for movement(left hand)
I have the enter button as the toss wpn(don't need a pistol so I ditch that ASAP and any unwanted wpn I pick up during a heated mano a mano battle(irritating and I know I can turn of the auto switch weapons, but that is a personal preferance I  have))
the shift right below enter is jump
the cntr right below shift is crouch
the 0 on number pad is deemer

my mouse(3 button wheeled optical)
left main fire
right alt fire
middle tele
wheel up sniper
wheel down esr

I do well and have tried a few other things, but this works for me

:)

Raven...

Hard to picture that set up... can you take a pic of that keyboard.  is it aleft handed keyboard?

Anyhow I keep the enforcer around for a couple reasons... even the flak cannon.  Once upon a lan game where there is no lag, flak cannons are useful to disarm deemers.  It's almost near impossible for me to pull off now since my ping is like never lower than 400.  But if some bastard tries to deemer you, and you anticipate it, flak it, it will up in the guys face.

As for the enforcer, it's for easy kills.  You deemer someone, or notice someone lucky enough to inch away a deemer that didnt kill up but takes 90% of his energy.  Switch to enforcer, and cap his ass.  It fires much faster and accurate than ESR, and all it takes is 1 shot.  Sniper rilfe works too but you have to have it.  You always have the enforcer cus it;s a default weapon with 50 amo.  :D

i heard about that controller... actually scratch showed it to me...

it's nice.  kinda cheating tho..  since you can program a double-tap to a key... lol

I still recommend using the numpad set up... because its more universal.

You never know when you'd be at some friends place who has an extra PC and he challenges you to a game!  You dont got your controller with you.  So you gotta use the keyboard!  It's the universal controller man.

Every keyboard has a numpad.

I've been using my configs since 1998 playing quake2.  ;)  and was a keyboard playing before that on quake1.

right             alt fire
middle           translocator
wheelup         sniper
wheeldown     esr

maybe that is a better visual

twisty... if you play that well at the games default... i dont know how well you'll play when it's tweaked to your comfort level.

The idea is to tweak the controls so all your favorite moves and weapons are close and easy to reach when you need it most.  Then remove the rest of the stuff you never use.

It help speeds your response time and adds more precise control to your game.

Posted by: twistytank on Mar. 20 2003,15:04

last time i tweaked my settings was when i disabled jumping so id learn to double tap better.. that lasted for about 2 hrs
Posted by: Guest on April 14 2003,04:00

sometimes you have to sacrifice a few days of playing lousy to practice on new controlls and get used to it... before you play good.

gotta experiment with a few things until you find what works for you.  everyone is different.  hand size, weak fingers... left handed right handed... it's all different for everyone.

#### whenever i find myself needing to learn something new, i always suck for a week or so until i get the new tricks down.  usually thats how you take it to the next level.

i use to never doubletap forward and backward, jsut sideway... took me a week to get forward... and a month to get backward down.  between then, i always get my arse owned when i try to doubletap and it didnt work.  lol  now i can do it 2nd nature, along with teleporting sniping and crouching.

trust me it's worth the pain to get it.

LMAO again.

Have I become such a whore with the rifle????

:O

Yes, that is the answer. But some payment would be nice, maybe even dinner afterwords. ROF

Also for the record, I'd like to say that I don't have a double-tap programmed. My poor little fingers get tired hitting the arrow keys so #### much, lol

the double code would be a nice asset though...hmmmmm

If that's true,

I'm afraid what the kid can do when we unlock his full potential.

I dont question his aiming skills, but last we danced, experienced reign supreme.  Something I thought Scratch early on.

He learn no matter how good of aim he has, he cant touch me in the game unless he put it all on the table and willing not to rely soley on aim.

You cant hit what you cant see i always say.  ;-)

also from HBK (WWE), "dont hunt what you cant kill..."

I'll like to be able to have you guys join me some weekends late nights were work on some weaknesses and tune our strengths.

Pretty much if you play like me, (so-so aim but nimble) we'll fine ways to do what we can for aim, but work on being nimble... your movements, your translocating... flipping... etc.

and if you got a nasty aim... work on making it better, and improve some dodging skills to buy you the time to get the lock on a frag with that nasty aim.

Everyone is different.  Gotta figure out what works for each of ya and make it work better.  Slatts want you to join to.

Problem is i only play mostly late nights on weekends.

first lesson: Deemer Whoring 101.
it's not about hogging the deemer to yourself... it's about how you use it affectively.

;-)

This is too funny. :D

Like Sean said you cant depend on aim alone.And I will put it all on the line when I play.Being risky will when matches.The n50 is available to everyone who chooses to use it so anyone that thinks it is an advantage get off your 30 bucks and go get one..... :D

When we gonna get some more games in Sean.Had a blast last time we played..... :D

The RatzPad is nice too.  :D

I feel like my mouse is gliding on air...

kinda like the smooth movement when playing airhockey.

hasnt really help my aim that much... wait... i think it has... not sure... w/o the pad i play at .75 to 1.5 mouse sensitivity...

with it.. I'm at 2.5 now.  =/  aim feels the same tho... but atleast my turning is a lot faster... so it must help with that.

usually when i turn too fast at that sensitivity my mouse goes crazy.

So after playig UT for 2 days with it... my initial verdict:

* didnt help with aim.
* didnt hurt my aim.
* lets me play at higher sensitivity.
* which let me turn a lot faster, harder for players to lose me now.  :D

1 thumbs up.

maybe after playing with it for 1 week or 2 and getting use to it... it  might help my aim even more and i'll give it 2 thumbs.  we'll see.

price $14.99 each...

u all have friggin wierd controls... i dunno how u do it, well maybe thats why u all are so easy to hit :p  ... my controls are fairly simple

Z= left strafe
X=right strafe
alt=back
space=jump
scroll= switch weapons
right click=move forward
left click= shoot
shift= alt fire.

now if u wanna do some serious ownin i suggest u all switch to those controls hehe lol   :laugh:

Posted by: wilder on July 23 2003,21:44

lol... da hell ytou play with controls like that!  lol

it's no wonder you dont switch weapons so fast.  :D

i know you weakness now.  :D

ur controls remind me of marathon controls...  anyway... you're missing a button for kneel-down.

and you dont got room to use other keys to bind, esr, translocator, and deemer.

Posted by: Guest on July 24 2003,12:41

yeah ive always been wonderin about that.... hmmm so should i set a single key to a single weapon? and then i will be able to switch faster.... i have c = croutch if i forgot to add that.......lol pfft weakness u must be forgettin i dont have any  :D

Posted by: Guest on July 24 2003,12:42

well maybe i could set a or s as esr/ trans i dont use deemer much anyway because i always end up killing myself lol  damn deemers :angry:
Posted by: wilder on July 24 2003,17:32

I do it to amuse people, I enjoy making peeps laugh. Like I said before. But that was not me you seen walking down lake street the other day on your way to work, I swear! :;):  My girl hasnt started to pimp me out yet.
And may I add..... You all have some messed up controls! I use the arrows, default controls except I switched the jump to the scroll, I can press it down you know?

Posted by: wilder on July 24 2003,21:44

my scroll button is my alt-fire...
my scroll up is translocator
my scroll down is my sniper rifle... gotta have that rifle handy... I'm a sniper at the core.  :D  dont tell raven... he's not allow to snipe.  :D
